Cybersecurity Risk Assessment

An independent security risk assessment is preferable to one done by your existing team for several reasons:

  • Greater objectivity: We’re not going to sweep potential issues under the rug, and we’re not restricted by office politics.
  • Fresh eyes: We work with businesses with anywhere from 10 to 100+ employees across a variety of industries. We know what security issues to look for and bring a fresh perspective since we don’t work with your systems daily.
  • Credibility: Customers, investors, and insurers have reason to be skeptical of an organization that investigates themselves and finds nothing wrong. An independent assessment proves your commitment to security.

Benefits

Avoid common causes of downtime, lower your insurance premiums, and protect your reputation.

What to expect

  1. Interview: We start by seeking to understand how technology is used in your organization. By phone or video call, we’ll ask about the type of information you handle, how it is transmitted and stored, backup systems, staff training, policies and more.
  2. Phishing test: Next, we send an email to your staff that mimics a phishing email. This tests the ability of your staff to distinguish between a legitimate email and a scam. You’ll receive a report of who failed the test and may need re-training.
  3. Vulnerability scan: The third step of our assessment is to run a scan tool from a computer on your network. The tool does not need admin rights but checks for common security risks across your network.
  4. Final report: At the end of our assessment, you’ll receive a report that documents our findings. At your request, we can also provide a cyber insurance assessment that presents this information in the context of insurers’ questions and requirements.

Cybersecurity Incident Response & Recovery

The best time to work on incident response and recovery is now, before something happens.

Incident response plan development

Prepare for an incident before it happens so you can resume operations quickly. Get a complete incident response plan that identifies:

  • Response team roles and responsibilities, including your response coordinator, insurance company, legal counsel, incident response and forensics team, and IT support. Having these relationships in place and documented will enable you to react more quickly.
  • Processes you will follow to get up and running. Find out how each of your partners handles cyber incidents from the time you call, and what information they will need from you.

Incident response and forensics

When you’ve been hit by a cyber incident like ransomware attack or data breach, every minute counts. Rely on our expert team to:

  • Evaluate and isolate. We will take immediate steps to find out what systems are affected and isolate them from the network. We’ll also do our best to isolate critical systems to prevent further damage.
  • Investigate. Next, we will investigate what occurred and what steps are needed to prevent a similar incident in the future. If necessary, we will bring in a forensics team for a deeper analysis.
  • Restore. We will restore data and systems to the extent possible. This usually includes rebuilding servers and workstations to make sure no malicious software or backdoors remain. Depending on your backups, we can help restore data.
  • Recover and follow-up. Hardening your systems against future attacks may take time. We can work with you to implement the recommendations from your investigation.

Backup and disaster recovery

The best way to recover from a cyber incident is to have a good backup system. Our team will identify your critical data and systems, design and implement a backup solution, and test it. We will show your IT team how to make sure backups are happening and how to test backups. We also provide this as part of our managed IT services

Case Study

Recovering after a cyberattack

Quick fix for a $150,000 email mistake

One small company came to us for help securing their network after a breach. What happened? Hackers gained access to their email system and used it to send out fraudulent invoices. The company’s clients paid false invoices to the tune of almost $150,000. Insurance did not cover the losses.

The hackers accessed a global admin account and from there created their own email account. The organization did not use multifactor authentication

We got rid of the bad account, required everyone to update their passwords and set up MFA. Not having MFA was a costly mistake.

Back to work after a $500,000 ransomware attack

Another small company came to us after they became a victim of ransomware and extortion. Hackers acquired employee data and posted salaries online.

While we got the business operational in about a week, it took three months for them to become fully functional again.

We had to rebuild what they had with limited resources during the pandemic, even scrounging up used firewalls since new ones weren’t available.

A backup disk hadn’t been working for months.  However, we were at least able to restore the older data. The business had an outdated Exchange server, which we promptly migrated to Microsoft 365.

Organizations can avoid these costly breaches with managed IT services. But if the worst has already happened, we can help you get secured and back in business as soon as possible.
