Why CAD and BIM files overwhelm basic IT
If you try to push massive Revit models, Civil 3D files, or SolidWorks assemblies over a standard VPN or SharePoint, you’ve likely seen the results: slow syncs, broken links, and corrupted data.
Engineering and design firms hit a specific problem with CAD software, said Ian MacRae, founder and president of E-N Computers. One designer can work on a file alone, but sharing that work with a team takes a separate project management module for the CAD system — and most firms don’t have one.
“What commonly happens is people try to pass large files around over VPNs or SharePoint,” MacRae said. “They get data corruption issues, and the whole file becomes corrupted when they’re down to the wire for a deadline.”
To collaborate effectively, you need dedicated Product Data Management (PDM) servers. Properly maintaining and backing up these specialized database vaults requires a level of engineering expertise that goes far beyond basic IT support.
Why $3,500 workstations need more than basic troubleshooting
A generic MSP pushes the same driver and Windows updates to every client on the same schedule — and an update that’s harmless on a laptop can break a GPU driver you depend on for your specific version of CAD or BIM software, corrupting a render mid-project. We check driver and firmware updates against what those vendors have actually certified before we push them, so your workstation stays matched to the software running on it.
We also watch GPU and RAM usage on these machines, not just whether they’re online. That’s how we catch a workstation bottlenecking on a big assembly file before it costs you a deadline. Depending on the specific government work you do, you might need Autodesk for Government, a custom virtual workspace on AWS GovCloud or Microsoft Azure Government, or a secure on-premises server. Building and maintaining these solutions increases your costs compared to a standard office.
Compliance rules push some firms off the cloud versions of the software they’d otherwise use, MacRae said.
“They could be getting offered solutions like Autodesk Construction Cloud, but they have to either buy the government version or host an on-prem or virtual server,” he said. “You’d have to buy a server and have additional IT support fees for the server.”
Why a crash before a deadline can cost you the bid
